In York, we have a large number of sports coaches working in voluntary sports clubs, professional sports clubs, on a self employed basis or through the Community Sports Coach Scheme (CSCS).

We'll be adding further information to this section over the next few months, so please let us know what additional information you'd like to see here.

Volunatry Sports Coaches

The vast majority of coaches within the city are volunteers who do a tremendous job inspiring and developing sports people of all ages. The Active York Volunteer and Coaches Association provides a range of support and information aimed at supporting them in the community. The Association is open to all coaches and volunteers in York and offers -

  • regular updates of Sport and Active Leisure Training Opportunities (SALTO), which offers a wide range of national governing body awards, Sportscoach UK workshops, Runningsports seminars and first aid courses taking place in York
  • access to the Resource Loan Scheme - the Sport and Active Leisure team at the City of York Council has a wide range of books and coaching resources available for coaches and volunteers to loan free of charge
  • regular Active York Sport Update E-zines, highlighting examples of best practice , good news stories and opportunities for clubs and coaches in the city
  • a free Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure, completed by the City of York Council

Community Sports Coaches

Also in York, we have a number of Community Sports Coaches, who are part-funded through Sport England's Community Sports Coaches Scheme (CSCS). These coaches aim to deliver on a number of key targets including -

  • increasing the number of young people taking part in sport and physical activity
  • increasing the number of people over the age of 16 taking part in physical activity
  • increasing the number of people with disabilities who regularly take part in sport and physical activity

Community Sports Coaches working in the city are -

  • David Dewey, a multi sports coach, based at the City of York Council
  • Caroline England, a disability sports coach, based at the City of York Council
  • Adam Prentice, a rugby league coach, based at York City Knights
  • Catherine Butt and Ruth Bickerdike, swim coaches, based at the City of York Council
  • Jonathon, a climbing and outdoor/adventurous activities coach, based at Oaklands Sports Centre
  • Sharon Jux, a multi sports coach, based at the Yorvik School Sports Partnership
  • Denise Reddy, a multi sports coach, based at the Yorvik School Sports Partnership
  • the Rugby Football Union (RFU) also have 2 rugby coaches working within the city
